Il a fait ses études d’histoire à l’Université de la Sorbonne à Paris, avant de faire sa formation en cinéma à l’ESEC et il exerce son métier de réalisateur de film depuis 1976. Il a signé la réalisation de plus d’une vingtaine de films de cinéma et de télévision, dont quatre longs métrages de fiction cinéma qui ont tous connus un succès national et international remarquable. Son premier film Wend Kuuni a été primé dans le monde entier, recevant notamment le César du Meilleur Film Francophone en France en 1985, tandis que son dernier long métrage intitulé Buud Yam a reçu l’Étalon de Yennenga le grand prix du 15ème Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou en 1997; et a fait partie la même année de la sélection de la Quinzaine des réalisateurs. Parallèlement à sa carrière de cinéaste, il a dirigé plusieurs institutions nationales et internationales, dont le Centre National du Cinéma du Burkina Faso et la Fédération Panafricaine des Cinéastes. En février 2003, il a fondé Imagine, un institut de formation continue et de perfectionnement aux métiers du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel. Il est enseignant, scénariste et réalisateur de cinéma.
He studied history at the Sorbonne University in Paris, before starting his internship in cinema at ESEC and has been working as a film director since 1976. He has directed more than some twenty cinema and television films, including four feature-length cinema films which have all enjoyed remarkable national and international success. His first film Wend Kuuni was awarded worldwide, notably receiving the César for Best Francophone Film in France in 1985, while his last feature entitled Buud Yam received the Yennenga Stallion, the grand prize of the 15th Pan-African Festival of Cinema and Television of Ouagadougou in 1997; and was part of the Directors’ Fortnight selection the same year. Alongside his career as a filmmaker, he has directed several national and international institutions, including the Center National du Cinéma du Burkina Faso and the Pan-African Federation of Filmmakers. In February 2003, he founded Imagine, an institute for continuous training and advanced training in cinema and audiovisual professions. He is a teacher, screenwriter and film director.
