Precursor of the 7th art, she is the first woman in the world to create fictions, phonoscenes and colorize animated images. Her career began in 1896 with her short film The Cabbage Fairy (often presented as the first fiction in the history of cinema), she was 23 years old. Secretary of Léon Gaumont, she became the director of promotional skits for the company’s customers. She made more than 400 films until 1910, when she founded her own production company Solax film and co in New York. After many films made or produced in the United States, she filed for bankruptcy in 1920 and returned to France.
Alice Guy leaves an unknown and avant-garde work showing an appetite for certain social themes: sexism, feminism, racism, but also child abuse. She will always be at the forefront of innovation, experimenting with new technologies: special effects, colorization, sound, making-of.
Narration
The film-concert evokes the story of this woman with an extraordinary destiny. “With Léon Gaumont, I have the privilege of attending Leaving the Lumière factory in Lyon, the very first cinema screening. I am so enthusiastic that I propose to my boss to write sketches and have them performed by my friends. I obtain his authorization on the express condition of continuing my work as secretary at the same time. I then made many small films. »
All her life she battles against a patriarchal society, where women must stay at home. Despite everything, she manages to combine the functions of married woman, mother, director and entrepreneur. “Later, I will get married and go to the United States. I will have two children. In New York, I will create a film production company, I will become the richest woman of the moment, I will make nearly 1000 films. We will lose a lot… we will even forget that I was the first female director in the world!”
The music
The music of this cine-concert offers a range of sounds and rhythms accompanying the diversity of the topics covered, where cello and accordion will be the main protagonists. The instrumentarium is also made up of a guitar, a toy-piano, percussion, instruments invented for musical creation and sound objects to add noise to certain sequences.

Après de nombreux films réalisés ou produits aux États-Unis, elle dépose le bilan en 1920, et rentre en France.
Alice Guy laisse une œuvre méconnue et avant-gardiste montrant une appétence pour certains thèmes sociaux : le sexisme, le féminisme, le racisme, mais également la maltraitance des enfants. La narration
Le ciné-concert évoque l’histoire de cette femme au destin hors du commun. « Avec Léon Gaumont, j’ai le privilège d’assister à La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon, la toute première séance de cinéma. Je suis si enthousiaste que je propose à mon patron d’écrire des saynètes et de les faire jouer par mes amis. J’obtiens son autorisation à la condition expresse de continuer en même temps mon travail de secrétaire. Je réalise alors de nombreux petits films. »
Toute sa vie elle bataille contre une société patriarchale, où la femme doit rester au foyer. Malgré tout, elle réussit à combiner les fonctions de femme mariée, mère, réalisatrice et cheffe d’entreprise. « Plus tard, je me marierai et je partirai aux Etats-Unis. J’aurai deux enfants. À New-York, je créerai une société de production de cinéma, je deviendrai la femme la plus riche du moment, je réaliserai près de 1000 films. On en perdra beaucoup… on oubliera même que j’ai été la première femme réalisatrice au monde !»
La musique
La musique de ce ciné-concert propose un panel de sonorités et de rythmes accompagnant la diversité des sujets abordés, où violoncelle et accordéon seront les principaux protagonistes. L’instrumentarium est également composé d’une guitare, d’un toy-piano, de percussions, d’instruments inventés pour la création musicale et d’objets sonores pour bruiter certaines séquences.
