Asmae El Moudir a étudié le cinéma documentaire à l’Université Abdelmalek Essaâdi de Tétouan, puis a obtenu un master en production à l’Institut Supérieur de l’Information et de la Communication (ISIC) de Rabat. Elle a également suivi un programme d’été à La Fémis à Paris, où elle a réalisé Mémoires anachroniques ou le couscous du vendredi midi. Ne trouvant pas de producteur pour ses films, elle fonde sa propre société de production.
Son film Le Mensonge originel, sorti en 2023, a été primé au Festival de Cannes dans la section Un Certain Regard, où elle a remporté le Prix de la mise en scène et le Prix du meilleur documentaire. Le film a également été sélectionné pour des festivals prestigieux tels que le TIFF et Sundance, et a été nominé pour l’Oscar du meilleur documentaire international. En 2024, elle a siégé au jury de la section Un Certain Regard à Cannes.

Asmae El Moudir is a Moroccan filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer born on February 16, 1990, in Salé. She is best known for her debut feature documentary, The Mother of All Lies, which delves into personal and collective memories of Morocco’s « Years of Lead. »
El Moudir studied documentary filmmaking at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University in Tétouan and earned a master’s degree in production from the Higher Institute of Information and Communication (ISIC) in Rabat. She also participated in a summer program at La Fémis in Paris, where she created Mémoires anachroniques ou le couscous du vendredi midi. Unable to find producers for her films, she established her own production company.
Her film The Mother of All Lies, released in 2023, won the Directing Prize and the Golden Eye for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section. The film was also showcased at prestigious festivals like TIFF and Sundance and was nominated for the Oscar for Best International Documentary. In 2024, she served on the Un Certain Regard jury at Cannes.

أسماء المدير هي مخرجة، كاتبة سيناريو، ومنتجة مغربية وُلدت في 16 فبراير 1990 بمدينة سلا. اشتهرت بفيلمها الوثائقي الطويل الأول، الكذب الأبيض (The Mother of All Lies)، الذي يستكشف الذكريات الشخصية والجماعية لفترة « سنوات الرصاص » في المغرب.
درست المدير السينما الوثائقية في جامعة عبد المالك السعدي بتطوان، ثم حصلت على ماجستير في الإنتاج من المعهد العالي للإعلام والاتصال بالرباط. كما شاركت في برنامج صيفي في مدرسة فميس بباريس، حيث أنجزت فيلمها ذكريات غير متزامنة أو الكسكس يوم الجمعة ظهراً. لعدم العثور على منتجين لأفلامها، أسست شركتها الخاصة للإنتاج.
فيلمها الكذب الأبيض، الذي صدر في 2023، فاز بجائزة الإخراج وجائزة العين الذهبية لأفضل فيلم وثائقي في مهرجان كان السينمائي ضمن قسم « نظرة ما ». تم عرض الفيلم في مهرجانات مرموقة مثل مهرجان تورونتو السينمائي ومهرجان سندانس، وتم ترشيحه لجائزة الأوسكار لأفضل فيلم وثائقي دولي. في عام 2024، شاركت في لجنة تحكيم قسم « نظرة ما » في مهرجان كان.
