SYNOPSIS :
A story of unlikely quests. A search for the disappeared through rubble and tortured bodies, a race for survival, and the possibility of hope.
Filmed for over 20 years in Syria and Germany, as well as in Turkey, Greece, Poland, Hungary, France, Spain and Iran, « Little Syria » follows the quest of a brother, his sister and her boyfriend, trapped between a Syria from which they ran for their lives, and a Europe which seems at times to embrace them and at others to push them back.
In the time of making of this film, more than 14 million Syrians have been forced to leave their homes. Syrians asked for asylum in more than 130 countries.
Reem, Mohammed and Yasser try to make sense of what is left of the Syrian Revolution.
« Little Syria » is a confidential insight into the invisible lives of Syrian refugees.
Director Biography – Madalina Rosca, Reem Karssli
Madalina Rosca is a documentary maker, collective artist, film scholar and media activist. At 18, she started as a host for the National Television of Romania. Her work carried her around the world, from the poppy fields of Afghanistan, to the last Holocaust survivor still living in Odessa, and down to the unfathomable uranium mines of western Romania.
She has years of experience in cultural management, as director of the socio-cultural space Make a Point on the outskirts of Bucharest and as the former director of the International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival “One World Romania”.
She studied film in Bucharest, London and Berlin, and holds a PhD from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, for her work “Seeing with Feeling” on documenting revolutions around the world.
Reem Karssli explores documentary genre in various mediums, and her works have been shown all over the world, in theatres, art galeries and cinema venues (Edinburgh Fringe Festival/ UK, Young Vic Theatre/ London, DOK Leipzig Festival/ Germany). She contributed as a researcher to media projects concerning refugees, such as “Voices of Refugees” (for BBC Media Action) and “Linking the Fields” (Zaatari Refugee Camp, UNHCR Headquarters of Amman and Zarka).
Reem holds a Masters Degree in Documentary from the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF.

Tourné pendant plus de 20 ans en Syrie et en Allemagne, ainsi qu’en Turquie, Grèce, Pologne, Hongrie, France, Espagne et Iran, Little Syria suit la quête d’un frère, de sa sœur et du petit ami de cette dernière, pris entre une Syrie dont ils ont fui pour sauver leur vie et une Europe qui semble parfois les accueillir et parfois les rejeter.
Au moment de la réalisation de ce film, plus de 14 millions de Syriens ont été contraints de quitter leur domicile. Des Syriens ont demandé l’asile dans plus de 130 pays.
Reem, Mohammed et Yasser tentent de donner un sens à ce qu’il reste de la Révolution syrienne.

Biographie des réalisatrices – Madalina Rosca, Reem Karssli
Madalina Rosca est réalisatrice documentaire, artiste collective, chercheuse en cinéma et militante médiatique. À 18 ans, elle débute comme animatrice pour la télévision nationale roumaine. Son travail l’a menée à travers le monde, des champs de pavot en Afghanistan, au dernier survivant de l’Holocauste vivant encore à Odessa, jusqu’aux mines d’uranium inexploitées de l’ouest de la Roumanie.
Elle possède une grande expérience en gestion culturelle, en tant que directrice de l’espace socio-culturel Make a Point en périphérie de Bucarest et ancienne directrice du Festival International de Documentaires sur les Droits de l’Homme One World Romania.
Elle a étudié le cinéma à Bucarest, Londres et Berlin, et est titulaire d’un doctorat de l’Université Ludwig Maximilian de Munich pour son travail Seeing with Feeling sur la documentation des révolutions dans le monde.

مادلينا روسكا مخرجة وثائقية، فنانة جماعية، باحثة سينمائية وناشطة إعلامية. بدأت عملها كَمقدمة برامج في التلفزيون الوطني الروماني وهي في سن الثامنة عشر. عملها أخذها حول العالم، من حقول الخشخاش في أفغانستان، إلى آخر ناجٍ من الهولوكوست لا يزال يعيش في أوديسا، وحتى مناجم اليورانيوم الغير مستغلة في غرب رومانيا.
