It’s the late summer of 1958. A boy named Yucha lives in a riverside village that is constantly threatened by typhoons.
He learns the local flood legend, which has long been passed down through the community, from a Kami-Shibai (paper theater) storyteller. Showing an illustrated paper card for each scene of the story, the storyteller tells of a broken-hearted girl who drowned herself in a river pool deep in the mountains. It is said that her grief has been causing great floods every few decades ever since.
A great typhoon is approaching. With childlike curiosity, Yucha sets off for the pool deep in the mountains, which even adults fear, in the hope of stopping the flood and soothing the girl’s sorrow.
Director Biography – Masakazu Kaneko
Masakazu KANEKO (gender: male) was born in Tokyo in 1978. He graduated from the School of International Politics, Economics and Communication at Aoyama Gakuin University. After graduation, he studied under Director Takahisa Zeze at the Film School of Tokyo. He went on to direct six short films while working in the fields of corporate video packages, films and TV commercials.
In 2016, his first feature film, « The Albino’s Trees », was officially screened in the Forward Future Section of the 6th Beijing International Film Festival, China. It won 20 awards at international film festivals worldwide.
In 2021, Kaneko completed his second feature film, « Ring Wandering. » It had its world premiere at the 37th Warsaw International Film Festival and received the Ecumenical Jury Award, Special Mention. It had its Japanese premiere at the 22nd TOKYO FILMeX. « Ring Wandering » won the Golden Peacock Award (Grand Prix) at the 52nd International Film Festival of India and the Best Screenplay Award at the 43rd Durban International Film Festival in South Africa.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs of the Government of Japan, selected KANEKO as one of the three filmmakers to promote and facilitate Japanese filmmaking internationally, and also as one of the four emerging directors to take part in the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival and the European Film Market on the recommendation of UNIJAPAN.
« River Returns » is his third feature film.

Été 1958. Yucha, un jeune garçon vivant dans un village au bord de la rivière, est confronté aux menaces constantes des typhons.
Il découvre la légende locale des inondations, transmise de génération en génération, grâce à un conteur de Kami-Shibai (théâtre de papier). Celui-ci raconte l’histoire d’une jeune fille au cœur brisé qui s’est noyée dans un bassin de montagne. On dit que sa tristesse déclenche de terribles crues tous les quelques décennies.
Alors qu’un puissant typhon approche, Yucha, mû par une curiosité enfantine, décide de s’aventurer dans les montagnes jusqu’au bassin redouté, espérant apaiser le chagrin de la jeune fille et empêcher l’inondation.
Biographie du réalisateur – Masakazu Kaneko
Masakazu Kaneko, né à Tokyo en 1978, est diplômé de l’Université Aoyama Gakuin (École de politique internationale, économie et communication). Après ses études, il a suivi l’enseignement du réalisateur Takahisa Zeze à la Film School of Tokyo.
Il a réalisé six courts métrages tout en travaillant dans la vidéo institutionnelle, le cinéma et la publicité télévisée.
En 2016, son premier long métrage The Albino’s Trees a été présenté dans la section Forward Future du 6e Festival International du Film de Pékin et a remporté 20 prix dans des festivals internationaux.
En 2021, son deuxième long métrage Ring Wandering a fait sa première mondiale au 37e Festival International du Film de Varsovie, remportant une Mention spéciale du Jury Œcuménique. Il a ensuite été couronné du Paon d’Or (Grand Prix) au 52e Festival International du Film de l’Inde et du Prix du Meilleur Scénario au 43e Festival du Film de Durban (Afrique du Sud).
Sélectionné par l’Agence pour les affaires culturelles du gouvernement japonais, Kaneko a été désigné parmi trois cinéastes pour promouvoir le cinéma japonais à l’international et a participé à la 72e Berlinale ainsi qu’au European Film Market sur recommandation de UNIJAPAN.
River Returns est son troisième long métrage.

في صيف عام 1958، يعيش الصبي « يوتشا » في قرية على ضفاف النهر، مهددة دائماً بالفيضانات الناتجة عن الأعاصير.
يتعرف على أسطورة الفيضان المحلي التي تناقلتها الأجيال عبر راوٍ في مسرح كامي-شيباي (مسرح الورق). تعرض القصة فتاة يائسة غرقت في بركة جبلية، ويُقال إن حزنها يسبب فيضانات كبرى كل بضعة عقود.
مع اقتراب إعصار قوي، ينطلق « يوتشا » بدافع فضوله الطفولي نحو البركة العميقة في الجبال – المكان الذي يخشاه الكبار – أملاً في إيقاف الفيضان وتهدئة روح الفتاة الغارقة.
سيرة المخرج – ماساكازو كانيكو
وُلد ماساكازو كانيكو في طوكيو عام 1978. تخرج من جامعة « أوياما غاكوين » (كلية السياسة الدولية والاقتصاد والاتصال). بعد تخرجه، درس تحت إشراف المخرج « تاكاهيسا زيزي » في مدرسة طوكيو للسينما.
أخرج ستة أفلام قصيرة أثناء عمله في مجال الفيديوهات المؤسسية والإعلانات والأفلام.
في عام 2016، عُرض فيلمه الروائي الطويل الأول The Albino’s Trees في قسم « المستقبل الجديد » بمهرجان بكين السينمائي الدولي السادس، وحصل على 20 جائزة من مهرجانات دولية.
في عام 2021، أنجز فيلمه الروائي الثاني Ring Wandering الذي عُرض لأول مرة في مهرجان وارسو السينمائي الدولي الـ37، وحصل على « جائزة لجنة التحكيم المسكونية – تنويه خاص ». كما فاز بجائزة « الطاووس الذهبي » (الجائزة الكبرى) في مهرجان الهند السينمائي الدولي الـ52، وجائزة « أفضل سيناريو » في مهرجان ديربان السينمائي الدولي الـ43 بجنوب إفريقيا.
