SYNOPSIS :
In a Reunion Island housing project, as the time of the sacrifice for the Aïd el-Kebir approaches, Ibrahim, 12 years old, of Comoran descent, is bullied by Evan, a neighbour of the same age, who accuses him of being an animal killer. When Ibrahim learns that a goat is about to be delivered to his building he decides to save it…but Evan is watching.
Director Biography – Nicolas Séry
Nicolas Séry was born of Réunionese parents, in Melun, in 1980. Having returned to Réunion island, Nicolas now questions not only the limited room given to the Creole language and the island’s history in society but also the lack of knowledge and representation of the culture in France and Réunion island. For Nicolas, directing Creole speaking actors therefore becomes a militant act.
In 2017, he is chosen by “Talents La Kour”, a supportive measure developed by Cinékour, linked with the “Talents En Court” measure launched by the CNC, which takes him to pitch his scenario for “The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers” (original title “Reine Kayanm”), at the “Rencontres Talents en Court” in the Comedy Club in Paris where he meets Anne BERJON, the producer of Mondina Films.
This project will become his first short film, “The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers”, which he directs in november of 2020. Nicolas Séry’s scenario for “The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers” runs for the “label scenario” of La Maison du Film. It is the first time that any project coming out of Réunion island makes it onto the list of 20 selected scenarios.
Nicolas takes time to improve his scenario and to do so participates in both the Maison du Film’s and Trégor Cinéma’s respective programmes.
His project “The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers” earns the support of several organisations notably from Région Réunion and their measure aiming to help local Production and from the CNC, receiving a grant specialised in aiding projects linked to overseas cultures.
His film was also preemptively bought by France Télévisions – Réunion La 1ère.
In his film, Nicolas looks at the appropriation of his cultural heritage through Ray, a teenager torn between his roots and modernity.

Dans un projet de logements de l’île de la Réunion, à l’approche du sacrifice de l’Aïd el-Kebir, Ibrahim, 12 ans, d’origine comorienne, est harcelé par Evan, un voisin du même âge, qui l’accuse d’être un tueur d’animaux. Lorsque Ibrahim apprend qu’une chèvre va être livrée dans son immeuble, il décide de la sauver… mais Evan observe.
Biographie du réalisateur – Nicolas Séry :
Nicolas Séry est né de parents réunionnais à Melun en 1980. De retour sur l’île de la Réunion, Nicolas s’interroge non seulement sur la place limitée accordée à la langue créole et à l’histoire de l’île dans la société, mais aussi sur le manque de connaissance et de représentation de cette culture en France et à la Réunion. Pour Nicolas, diriger des acteurs parlant créole devient donc un acte militant.
En 2017, il est choisi par « Talents La Kour », une mesure de soutien développée par Cinékour et liée à la mesure « Talents En Court » lancée par le CNC, qui lui permet de présenter son scénario pour The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers (titre original Reine Kayanm) lors des Rencontres Talents en Court au Comedy Club de Paris, où il rencontre Anne BERJON, productrice de Mondina Films.
Ce projet devient son premier court-métrage, The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers, qu’il réalise en novembre 2020. Le scénario de Nicolas Séry pour ce film est sélectionné pour le label scénario de La Maison du Film, la première fois qu’un projet provenant de l’île de la Réunion est retenu parmi les 20 scénarios sélectionnés.
Nicolas prend le temps d’améliorer son scénario en participant aux programmes respectifs de La Maison du Film et de Trégor Cinéma. Son projet reçoit le soutien de plusieurs organismes, notamment de la Région Réunion et du CNC, par une subvention spécialisée pour les projets liés aux cultures d’outre-mer. Son film est également préacheté par France Télévisions – Réunion La 1ère.
Dans ce film, Nicolas explore l’appropriation de son héritage culturel à travers Ray, un adolescent déchiré entre ses racines et la modernité.
