From her upbringing as a young Haitian girl in Montreal-Nord to her journeys in Brazil, the film reveals her encounters with her chosen family and the discovery of her identity as a woman and musician. A new sense of belonging emerges from these experiences, nurturing her inspiration. Aware of the wounds she carries, Aïsha embarks on a learning process aimed at transforming her traumas into objects of healing.

MAÏLIS
Maïlis, a French and Canadian director based in Montreal, fearlessly explores the delicate interplay between strength and vulnerability, infusing her work with an emotionally charged perspective. Her subversive projects, infused with a strong feminist lens, ignite meaningful dialogues and captivate audiences while showcasing her unique creative voice.
She firmly believes in her role as an image-maker, embracing the responsibility of crafting narratives that contribute positively to the world by using her artistic platform to amplify underrepresented voices.
AÏSHA C. VERTUS
Aïsha C. Vertus’ alias, Gayance, is taken from the Haitian creole word for joyfulness. A Montreal native and a first-generation Canadian of Haitian descent, she has been DJing for over a decade, leaving her mark on venues in Amsterdam, Paris, São Paulo, London, and beyond.
Mascarade – Origin Story stands as her inaugural short film where she takes on the roles of both creative director and music composer. The film is rooted in the literal origin story behind the creation of her debut album, which shares the same title. In March 2023, the album hit the shelves under Rhythm Section and secured its place among the 10 shortlisted albums for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize.

De ces expériences naît un nouveau sentiment d’appartenance, nourrissant son inspiration. Consciente des blessures qu’elle porte, Aïsha entame un processus d’apprentissage visant à transformer ses traumatismes en objets de guérison.
Le film plonge ainsi au cœur de son parcours, mettant en lumière la transformation personnelle et la résilience face aux épreuves de la vie.

L’alias d’Aïsha C. Vertus, Gayance, vient du mot créole haïtien signifiant la joie. Née à Montréal et issue de la première génération canadienne d’origine haïtienne, elle est DJ depuis plus de dix ans, ayant marqué des scènes à Amsterdam, Paris, São Paulo, Londres et ailleurs.
Mascarade – Histoire d’origine est son premier court métrage, où elle occupe les rôles de directrice artistique et compositrice. Le film s’enracine dans l’histoire littérale de la création de son premier album du même nom. Sorti en mars 2023 sous le label Rhythm Section, l’album a figuré parmi les 10 disques finalistes du prestigieux Polaris Music Prize.

اسمها الفني غاينس مأخوذ من الكلمة الكريولية الهايتية التي تعني “البهجة”. عائشة من مواليد مونتريال، من أصول هايتية، وهي من الجيل الكندي الأول. عملت كمنسقة موسيقى (DJ) لأكثر من عقد من الزمن في مدن مثل أمستردام، باريس، ساو باولو، ولندن
