SYNOPSIS :

Scattered Sea follows 17 performers spanning two generations from the MENA/Maghreb region and Europe as they trace gestures of relation across borders—within a world fractured by historical trauma, displacement, and the longing for belonging. Through a poetic language of Magical Realism, performance, and documentary, the film constructs speculative spaces for decolonial reflection and future-oriented imaginaries.

Filmed across Morocco, Malta, and Germany, the geopolitical triangle shaped by layered colonial legacies and contemporary frictions between Europe and the MENA region is reflected. Through minimal gestures and symbolic actions, the performers inscribe and unsettle space. Hybrid zones of proximity and distance unfold: ruins, gardens, and streets are roamed; symbols are traced and deconstructed; sand is scattered and shaped into ephemeral islands between continents. The search for remnants transforms into a speculative act of placing traces—daring fragile beginnings.

The work weaves together cultural memory, decolonial inquiry, and historiographic critique, offering counter-narratives that resist linear temporality and binary world orders. It opens hybrid spaces for the reimagining of social and aesthetic imaginaries attuned to plural futures.

In her interdisciplinary practice, Lia Sáile (1985) explores borders and their crossings—physical and conceptual—as well as transitions, thresholds, and liminal spaces within media, (inter)cultural and socio-political contexts. She brings together fragments and concepts of reality, developing forms that make these fields of tension tangible. Her practice engages with culturality, tradition, and the construction of individual and collective identity, while interrogating systems of belonging and othering. By interweaving historical references with speculative futures, Sáile’s work constructs alternative imaginaries of belonging and coexistence.

She studied Theatre, Film and Media Studies in Vienna and Malta (Diploma I, Phil.), followed by postgraduate studies in Media Art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Diploma II, Art.), both completed with highest honors.

Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions and public space interventions in cities including Tunis (TN), Vienna (AT), Valletta (MT), Munich, Cologne (DE), and New York City (USA). She has exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art Malta, Picasso Museum Münster, IKOB Museum Eupen, and whiteBOX Munich, as well as in prominent international public spaces. In addition, she has participated in group exhibitions and international film and photography festivals in countries including the USA, Brazil, India, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Greece, Belgium, and China—such as the Athens Photo Festival (GR), Kassel Documentary Film Festival (DE), Regensburg Short Film Days (DE), and the Alternative Film/Video Festival in Belgrade (RS).

She has received numerous prestigious grants and fellowships, including support from KÖR – Public Art Vienna (AT), the C Photo Talent Grant with commissioned work for C Photo Magazine (London, UK/Spain), as well as major institutional project funding. She was nominated for the 2:1 Prize in Munich and the Young Artists Award of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). In 2024, she was invited to apply for the Forum Expanded section of the Berlin Biennale. Her works are held in the National Collection of Malta and the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta, Malta.

Tourné au Maroc, à Malte et en Allemagne, le triangle géopolitique reflète les héritages coloniaux et les frictions contemporaines entre l’Europe et la région MENA. À travers des gestes minimalistes et des actions symboliques, les performeurs inscrivent et perturbent l’espace. Des zones hybrides de proximité et de distance se déploient : ruines, jardins et rues sont parcourus ; des symboles sont tracés et déconstruits ; le sable est dispersé et façonné en îles éphémères entre les continents. La recherche des vestiges devient un acte spéculatif de placement de traces – osant des débuts fragiles.

L’œuvre tisse mémoire culturelle, investigation décoloniale et critique historiographique, offrant des contre-récits qui résistent à la temporalité linéaire et aux mondes binaires. Elle ouvre des espaces hybrides pour réimaginer des imaginaires sociaux et esthétiques adaptés à des futurs pluriels.

En 2025, Scattered Sea est présélectionné pour le Grand Prix des Amis de l’Académie des Arts Médias de Cologne.

Lia Sáile (1985) explore dans sa pratique interdisciplinaire les frontières et leurs traversées – physiques et conceptuelles – ainsi que les transitions, seuils et espaces liminaux dans les médias, les contextes (inter)culturels et sociopolitiques. Elle assemble des fragments et concepts de réalité pour rendre tangibles ces champs de tension. Son travail engage la culturalité, la tradition et la construction des identités individuelles et collectives, tout en interrogeant les systèmes d’appartenance et d’exclusion. En entrelaçant références historiques et futurs spéculatifs, Sáile construit des imaginaires alternatifs d’appartenance et de coexistence.

Elle a étudié le théâtre, le cinéma et les médias à Vienne et à Malte (Diplôme I, Philosophie), puis a poursuivi des études supérieures en Media Art à l’Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Diplôme II, Art), toutes deux avec les plus hauts honneurs.

Son travail a été présenté en expositions individuelles et interventions dans l’espace public à Tunis, Vienne, La Valette, Munich, Cologne et New York.
