SYNOPSIS :

This anime-doc stitches together colorful fragments of the personal life of Alia, a Lebanese woman. Growing up facing war and displacement, searching and not finding freedom, she forms a friendship with a would-be superhero on the shore of Beirut called Abu Samra. She trains with him and their monsters meet. Together, Alia and Abu Samra survive by finding comfort in the insanity that the city has sown in them. When the Lebanese revolution starts on 17 October 2019 they realize they are not alone.

Director Biography – Alia Haju

Alia Haju is a Brooklyn/Beirut-based filmmaker and musician. Alia grew up in South Lebanon until 1994 when she fled, during the Israeli war on Lebanon, to the UAE and later the US. In 2005 she returned to Lebanon to complete a BFA in concept art at the American University of Beirut. She then worked as a photographer and photo editor, covering the SWANA region and the Syrian war, and as a freelance investigative video journalist for multiple media organizations worldwide. She worked on many Lebanese film sets and directed the award-winning short anima/doc SHIP OF FOOLS (2024). She is also co-author of the award-winning feature doc KASHKASH (2020). Alia’s filmmaking has been supported by AFAC, Doha film institute, and MFG Filmförderung. She received support for her band Taktouka’s first album from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Alia has performed on world-famous stages like Lincoln Center, Great American Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, and the Joshua Tree Music Festival.

Synopsis (Français)

Ce docu-anime assemble des fragments colorés de la vie personnelle d’Alia, une femme libanaise. Ayant grandi en affrontant la guerre et le déplacement, en cherchant la liberté sans jamais la trouver, elle se lie d’amitié avec un aspirant super-héros sur les rivages de Beyrouth appelé Abu Samra. Elle s’entraîne avec lui et leurs monstres se rencontrent. Ensemble, Alia et Abu Samra survivent en trouvant du réconfort dans la folie que la ville a semée en eux. Lorsque la révolution libanaise commence le 17 octobre 2019, ils réalisent qu’ils ne sont pas seuls.

Biographie de la réalisatrice (Français)

Alia Haju est une réalisatrice et musicienne basée à Brooklyn et Beyrouth. Elle a grandi dans le sud du Liban jusqu’en 1994, lorsqu’elle a fui, pendant la guerre israélienne contre le Liban, vers les Émirats arabes unis, puis aux États-Unis. En 2005, elle retourne au Liban pour obtenir un BFA en concept art à l’Université américaine de Beyrouth.

Elle travaille ensuite comme photographe et éditrice photo, couvrant la région SWANA et la guerre en Syrie, et comme journaliste vidéo indépendante pour plusieurs médias à travers le monde. Elle a participé à de nombreux plateaux de cinéma libanais et a réalisé le court métrage anima/doc primé SHIP OF FOOLS (2024). Elle est également co-auteure du long documentaire primé KASHKASH (2020).

Le travail cinématographique d’Alia a été soutenu par l’AFAC, le Doha Film Institute et la MFG Filmförderung. Elle a reçu un soutien pour le premier album de son groupe Taktouka de la New York Foundation for the Arts. Alia s’est produite sur des scènes mondialement reconnues comme le Lincoln Center, le Great American Music Hall, Joe’s Pub et le Joshua Tree Music Festival.

الملخص (العربية)

هذا الفيلم الوثائقي-الرسومي يجمع بين شظايا ملونة من حياة عالية الشخصية، وهي امرأة لبنانية. نشأت مواجهة الحرب والتهجير، باحثة عن الحرية ولم تجدها، فتكوّن صداقة مع بطل خارق محتمل على شاطئ بيروت يُدعى أبو سمرة. تتدرب معه وتلتقي وحوشهما. معًا، تعيش عالية وأبو سمرة من خلال إيجاد الراحة في الجنون الذي زرعته المدينة في داخلهما. عندما تبدأ الثورة اللبنانية في 17 أكتوبر 2019، يدركان أنهما ليسا وحيدين

السيرة الذاتية للمخرجة (العربية)

عالية حجو هي مخرجة وموسيقية مقيمة في بروكلين وبيروت. نشأت في جنوب لبنان حتى عام 1994، عندما هربت خلال الحرب الإسرائيلية على لبنان إلى الإمارات العربية المتحدة ثم الولايات المتحدة. في عام 2005، عادت إلى لبنان لإكمال شهادة البكالوريوس في فن المفاهيم في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت

عملت بعد ذلك كصحفية فوتوغرافية ومحررة صور، تغطي منطقة SWANA والحرب السورية، وكصحفية فيديو مستقلة لعدة وسائل إعلام حول العالم. عملت في العديد من مواقع الأفلام اللبنانية وأخرجت الفيلم القصير الرسومي/الوثائقي الحائز على جوائز SHIP OF FOOLS (2024). كما شاركت في تأليف الفيلم الوثائقي الطويل الحائز على جوائز KASHKASH (2020)

لقد حظي عملها السينمائي بدعم من AFAC ومعهد الدوحة للأفلام وMFG Filmförderung. كما تلقت دعمًا لألبوم فرقتها Taktouka الأول من مؤسسة نيويورك للفنون. وقدمت عالية عروضًا على مسارح عالمية مشهورة مثل لينكولن سنتر، Great American Music Hall، Joe’s Pub، ومهرجان Joshua Tree الموسيقي
