SYNOPSIS :

A young woman living out of the city goes on two crucial road trips, one with her father, and the other with her fiancé to his parents house in the city. Upon arriving, she comes to question everything she thought she knew about him, and herself. « Does It Hurt Too Bad to Look at Me? » invites audiences to reflect on the fragility of relationships, the influence of parents on our choices, and self exploration.

Director Biography :

Rana Matar – Screenwriter & Filmmaker

Rana Matar is a Jordanian filmmaker. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking and Cinema Studies from the School of Cinematic Arts at Effat University. Her short fiction film, Does It Hurt Too Bad to Look at Me?, written and directed by her, premiered in the International Competition at the 45th Cairo Film Festival, in the New Cinema New Saudi lineup at the Red Sea Film Festival, and in the shorts competition of the 11th Saudi Film Festival.

She was also the cinematographer, director, and editor of the award-winning short documentary Your Voice Only, which won the Netflix Award for Best Documentary Film at the British Film Institute’s Future Film Festival 2025 and the NEOM Award for Best Saudi Documentary Film at her film school film festival, Effat International Film Festival & had its international premiere at the shorts competition of the 39th edition of Kurzfilm Hamburg Film Festival sponsored by ARTE.

Currently, Rana’s comedy-drama series “Leh Ya Soad”“Why Soad?” Written by her, has been selected to be developed at the 5th edition of the Mosalsalat Screenwriters Lab by the Royal Film Commission in Jordan.

Rana is a Cine-Gouna Emerge Program alumna of El Gouna Film Festival 7th edition for emerging talents/filmmakers. Furthermore, she was trained across all media sectors in the NEOM Media Industries internship program, becoming NEOM Media’s first internal intern across all Media sectors. She has also worked in the film programming department at the Red Sea International Film Festival, assisting in programming & evaluating international films.

She was featured in Marie Claire magazine for Women’s Day 2025 for inspiring women stories of film in the Middle East and in Mojeh Magazine as one of four female filmmakers representing the region. Her work has also been highlighted in Sayidaty Magazine in articles celebrating female filmmakers telling stories of humanity.

Synopsis :

Une jeune femme vivant hors de la ville entreprend deux voyages routiers cruciaux : l’un avec son père, et l’autre avec son fiancé vers la maison de ses parents en ville. À son arrivée, elle commence à remettre en question tout ce qu’elle pensait savoir sur lui et sur elle-même. Does It Hurt Too Bad to Look at Me? invite le public à réfléchir sur la fragilité des relations, l’influence des parents sur nos choix et l’exploration de soi.

Biographie de la réalisatrice – Rana Matar

Rana Matar est une cinéaste jordanienne. Elle est titulaire d’une licence en réalisation et études cinématographiques de la School of Cinematic Arts à l’Université Effat. Son court-métrage de fiction Does It Hurt Too Bad to Look at Me?, écrit et réalisé par elle, a été présenté en compétition internationale au 45ᵉ Festival du film du Caire, dans la section New Cinema New Saudi du Red Sea Film Festival, ainsi qu’en compétition courts-métrages au 11ᵉ Saudi Film Festival.

Elle a également assuré la direction photo, la réalisation et le montage du court documentaire primé Your Voice Only, qui a remporté le Netflix Award du Meilleur documentaire au Future Film Festival 2025 du British Film Institute, ainsi que le NEOM Award du Meilleur documentaire saoudien à l’Effat International Film Festival, où il a eu sa première internationale dans la compétition courts-métrages de la 39ᵉ édition du Kurzfilm Hamburg, soutenue par ARTE.

Actuellement, sa série comédie-dramatique Leh Ya Soad (Pourquoi Soad ?), qu’elle a écrite, a été sélectionnée pour le développement lors de la 5ᵉ édition du Mosalsalat Screenwriters Lab de la Royal Film Commission en Jordanie.

Rana est également alumna du programme Cine-Gouna Emerge du Festival d’El Gouna (7ᵉ édition), destiné aux jeunes talents. Elle a suivi une formation complète dans tous les secteurs des médias au programme de stages de la NEOM Media Industries, devenant la première stagiaire interne de NEOM Media à travers tous les secteurs. Elle a aussi travaillé au département de programmation du Red Sea International Film Festival, contribuant à la sélection et à l’évaluation de films internationaux.

Elle a été mise en avant dans le magazine Marie Claire pour la Journée internationale des femmes 2025, parmi les histoires inspirantes de femmes du cinéma au Moyen-Orient, et dans Mojeh Magazine comme l’une des quatre réalisatrices représentant la région. Son travail a également été célébré dans Sayidaty Magazine à travers des articles mettant en valeur des cinéastes racontant des histoires d’humanité.

رنا مطر مخرجة أردنية. تحمل بكالوريوس في صناعة الأفلام والدراسات السينمائية من كلية الفنون السينمائية بجامعة عفت. فيلمها الروائي القصير هل يؤلمني النظر إليّ كثيراً؟ الذي كتبته وأخرجته، عُرض في المسابقة الدولية بمهرجان القاهرة السينمائي الدولي الـ45، وفي برنامج New Cinema New Saudi بمهرجان البحر الأحمر السينمائي، وكذلك في مسابقة الأفلام القصيرة بمهرجان السعودية السينمائي الـ11

كما عملت مديرة تصوير ومخرجة ومونتيرة للفيلم الوثائقي القصير الحائز على الجوائز صوتك فقط، الذي فاز بجائزة نتفليكس لأفضل فيلم وثائقي في مهرجان الأفلام المستقبلية التابع لمعهد السينما البريطاني 2025، وبجائزة نيوم لأفضل فيلم وثائقي سعودي في مهرجان جامعة عفت الدولي للأفلام. وقد كانت له عروضه الدولية الأولى في مسابقة الأفلام القصيرة بالدورة الـ39 لمهرجان هامبورغ الدولي للأفلام القصيرة برعاية ARTE

حالياً، تم اختيار مسلسلها الكوميدي الدرامي ليه يا سعاد؟ من كتابتها للتطوير في مختبر كتاب المسلسلات (Mosalsalat Screenwriters Lab) بنسخته الخامسة، الذي تنظمه الهيئة الملكية للأفلام في الأردن

رنا أيضاً خريجة برنامج Cine-Gouna Emerge في مهرجان الجونة السينمائي (الدورة السابعة) لدعم المواهب الشابة. وتدربت في جميع قطاعات الإعلام ضمن برنامج تدريب نيوم لصناعات الإعلام، لتصبح أول متدربة داخلية في نيوم ميديا عبر جميع القطاعات. كما عملت في قسم البرمجة بمهرجان البحر الأحمر السينمائي الدولي، مساعدةً في برمجة وتقييم الأفلام الدولية

وقد تم تسليط الضوء عليها في مجلة ماري كلير بمناسبة يوم المرأة العالمي 2025 كواحدة من النساء الملهمات في مجال السينما في الشرق الأوسط، وفي مجلة موجة كإحدى أربع مخرجات يمثلن المنطقة. كما احتفى بها مجلة سيدتي من خلال مقالات تبرز المخرجات اللواتي يروين قصصاً إنسانية
